Ahem, Hair Botox is Literally the Answer to Smoother, Shinier Hair

Not gonna lie, so many beauty treatments come out that even I’m a bit skeptical initially. This treatment zaps your zits, this one gives you a clean face look, this one rids clogged pores, this one gives you smooth hair, and the list goes on. However, once I speak with the experts, I’m made a believer. And hair botox isn’t an exception to this. Now, it may be called hair “Botox”, however it’s a treatment that “doesn’t actually involve the use of the botulinum toxin (Botox),” Tschouldjian explains.

Hermine Tschouldjian, Owner and Stylist at Exclusive Hair Couture

What is Hair Botox?

If it doesn’t actually include Botox, then you’re probably wondering what it is. “It’s a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the health and appearance of hair. . . . It helps reduce frizz, restore shine, and make hair more manageable,” Tschouldjian says. She describes the process, describing, “[It] typically involves applying a product to the hair that contains various conditioning and hydrating ingredients to repair and rejuvenate damaged or dry hair.”

Hair Botox vs Deep Conditioning

While deep conditioning can just as easily moisturize and condition your hair, thus ridding it of that dry, damaged look, it will will only improve the condition of your hair. If you’re looking for a treatment that will actually remedy the problem, then that’s where hair Botox comes in, as it is “aimed at repairing and rejuvenating damaged hair.”

Hair Botox Treatments are *Temporary*

Although you may see results with hair Botox, that’s not to see the results will be permanent. If you’re looking for longer-lasting results, then you may want to “consider other hair treatments like keratin treatments or chemical straightening,” Tschouldjian tells us.

“For those who choose to continue with hair Botox, the treatments need to be done regularly to maintain the desired results. The frequency of hair Botox treatments can vary depending on your hair type, its condition, and how well you care for it, but it’s typically recommended every 2 to 4 months to maintain the benefits of the treatment. You should consult with a hairstylist or professional for personalized advice on the best treatment schedule for your specific hair needs.”

How to Extend the Duration of the Results

Okay, so now we know it’s not permanent, which is a real bummer, however that’s not to say you can’t do some things after the treatment to ensure that it lasts a bit longer. Tschouldjian explains, “It’s essential to follow proper hair care practices, which may include using sulfate-free shampoos, avoiding excessive heat styling, and maintaining a good maintenance routine as recommended by the stylist or the product manufacturer. Over time, the effects of the treatment will gradually fade, and you may need to repeat the procedure to maintain the desired results.”

Hair Botox Ingredients

Our squad always recommends that you do thorough research before going through with a treatment, such as hair Botox. Look up the ingredients on EWG and make sure you’re comfortable with the safety level.

To assist with this, we asked Tschouldjian to provide us with the common ingredients found in hair Botox treatments.

“Hyaluronic Acid: Helps to hydrate and retain moisture in the hair.

Cationic Polymers: These ingredients can enhance hair's texture and make it more manageable.

Antioxidants: These protect the hair from environmental damage.

Proteins (such as keratin): These repair and strengthen the hair shaft.

Vitamins and minerals: These nourish and promote overall hair health.

Amino Acids: Help in repairing and smoothing the hair.

Botanical Extracts: These can provide additional nourishment and improve hair condition.”

What to Consider Before Doing Hair Botox

Tschouldjian says, “Hair Botox is generally considered safe when performed by a trained and experienced professional. [Nevertheless,] like any cosmetic treatment, there are potential considerations:

Allergies: Some people may be sensitive or allergic to certain ingredients in Hair Botox products. It's essential to check the product's ingredients and perform a patch test before the full treatment.

Scalp sensitivity: If you have a sensitive scalp, the application process may cause discomfort or irritation. It's important to communicate any concerns with the stylist.

Proper application: The safety and effectiveness of hair Botox depend on proper application. A skilled professional should administer the treatment to avoid any adverse effects.

Overuse: Repeated and excessive use of hair Botox may lead to hair damage or unintended outcomes.”

Potential Side Effects

As you might have suspected, there are potential side effects and disclaimers you should beware of before scheduling an appointment with a trained professional for this treatment. When used as directed, *some* potential side effects include the following, according to Tschouldjian.

Allergies: Some individuals may be sensitive or allergic to the ingredients in hair Botox products. It's important to do a patch test before the treatment to check for any adverse reactions.

Over-processing: Overuse of hair Botox or using it too frequently can lead to hair becoming brittle or damaged.

Scalp irritation: Some people may experience scalp irritation or discomfort during the treatment process. This can vary depending on the product used and individual sensitivity.

Fading effects: The results of hair Botox are not permanent and will gradually fade over time. You'll need to repeat the treatment periodically to maintain the effects.

Choice of product: It's essential to choose a reputable and quality hair Botox product and have the treatment performed by a professional to minimize the risk of adverse effects.”

Results You’ll See with Hair Botox

Most times a hair Botox treatment will make your hair smoother and silkier, reduce frizz (tyvm), restore shine and repair damaged, dry, or brittle hair, and reduce split ends. I don’t know about y’all, but bad hair days are totally a thing (unfortunately) and it seems this treatment is the answer at least temporarily to waking up with less bed head, so styling my hair for the day ahead shouldn’t be too difficult, right?

For more on each result, read what Tschouldjian has to say:

“Smoother and frizz-free hair: Haor Botox can significantly reduce frizz and make hair smoother and more manageable.

Improved hair texture: It can enhance the texture of the hair, making it feel softer and silkier.

Increased shine: Hair Botox can restore shine to dull and damaged hair.

Hydration and moisture: It helps to hydrate and moisturize dry and brittle hair, improving its overall health.

Reduced split ends: This treatment may help minimize the appearance of split ends.

Easier styling: Hair becomes easier to style and may hold styles better after a hair Botox treatment.

Oh, aaaand IYDK: “Hair Botox products vary by brand and formulation, and the best product for you depends on your hair type, needs, and preferences,” Tschouldjian says.
